Methods of Using Demonstrations and Hands on Activities to Enhance Teaching in the Living Environment Curriculum

In this four day program, dozens of biology demonstrations, activities and labs will be shared with Living Environment teachers of all instructional levels.

The demonstrations are easy to set up and thought provoking,  fun , educational, and adhere to the Living Environment curriculum.  Every demo, activity, and lab can be utilized in all seven units of the Living Environment as mandated by NYS Department of Education. The goals of the program are to provide the following:

bulletMethods of Teaching Specific topics within the Curriculum
bullet Enhance your classroom presentations in many areas of the Curriculum.
bullet Encourage teachers to use methods in their classrooms that involve new demonstration ideas
bullet Expand the scope of your laboratory activities
bulletProvide a forum for discussion and sharing of their materials and ideas
bulletProvide an opportunity for teachers training for multiple disciplines

• Elephant Toothpaste (enzymes)
• pH Rainbows (acid-base indicators)
• Firefly Reaction (Luciferase-enzymes)
• Head Mites (Living/Nonliving)
• Milk of Magnesia Demo (Digestion/pH/enzymes)
• Dragon’s Breath (Energy in Carbon bonds)
• And many more…….
 
Activities include:
• Cut/Paste Synthesis (Dehydration Synthesis)
• Lava Lamps (hydrophilic/hydrophobic)
• Candy Chromatography (chromatography)
• Donut Classification (classification)
• Candy Cells (cell structure)
• Save Sam (scientific method)
• Dino Dig (Evolution)
• Yarn Food Web (ecology)
• And many more…..
Labs include:
• Little Shrimpers (scientific method)
• Thumb Wrestling (scientific method)
• Gummi Bear Lab (diffusion)
• Dots Candy Antibodies (Immune System)
• Alien Heart (circulatory system)
• Predator/prey-DDT (ecology)
• Fish Respiration (respiration)
• And many more…….

The program consists of 30 hours of training.  Each Day will be focused to specific areas of the Living Environment Curriculum.

Credit : A 30-hour certificate toward in-service credit will be issued for use according  to your school district’s policy.

Manhattanville College - Three Graduate Science Education Credits available upon  completion of Project  at an additional cost of $ 870.00.
