PWISTA 2011 Industry Science Teacher Training Program
Presented by Local Science Researchers and Industry Representatives

Tired of reading about the latest technologies and innovative science techniques. Come and experience them in our science teacher training program.

PWISTA, Putnam-Westchester Industry and Science Teacher Alliance, is designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge in modern instrumentation and technology used in industry today. This program will advance your background in analytical skills used in modern laboratories. It will help teachers transfer their knowledge of science applications into better classroom activities.

The primary purpose for each of these sessions is to provide teachers, like you, with the opportunity to experience relevant hands-on science experiments that can be brought back to the science classroom and laboratory. This program is also designed to enlighten teachers on the different jobs available for students who major in Science and Math.

PWISTA is open to all

July 2011 Program

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday
July 18th, 2011 July 19th, 2011 July 20th , 2011 July 21st, 2011

BASF The Chemical Company, 500 White Plains Road, Tarrytown, NY 10591

The program this year begins at BASF by exploring the unique infrastructure of the BASF research facility. Then the direction focuses on alternative fuels and ways of producing biodiesel using  a simple microwave technique. Then participants will explore methods of analysis of biodiesel. The morning continues studying smart materials such as thermo-responsive polymers. As a hands on experiment we can prepare thin films by spin coating on silicon wafers and measure the contact angles of the films at various temperature to showcase their temperature dependence. We will also make aqueous solutions and heat them up to illustrate polymer precipitation with increasing temperature or thermoresponsiveness.
The participants will study  cell culture laboratories and thermo-responsive polymers relationship to cell culture studies.

Day two morning session is dedicated to the scientific principles of hair cleansing and conditioning. Applications of the concepts to the science curriculum will be shared. Introduction the principles of hair gels will be investigated. The second half of the morning will be dedicated to the study of polymers , weathering, color matching, additives and pigments.    The afternoon is focused to the Pharmaceutical business. The presentation is focused on Excipients or inactive ingredients. Excipients make up the bulk of the final dosage form, and are used to hold the drug together, break it apart in the body, and target the release of the active ingredient to different parts of the body.

Day three morning begins with the study of alternative chemistry methods , green chemistry and the relationship of chemistry responsibility. The second half of the morning will have the participants learn about personality types and their own famous Myers Briggs type (MBTl). Through the use of interactive exercises , lectures and discussion participants will discover the rich and useful world of personality type. The participants will learn how knowledge of MBTl can enrich personal growth, relationships, teaching style and teamwork.

The beginning of the afternoon of day three is focused on "effect materials" which is the materials that generate metallic sheen in nonmetallic materials. The structure, optics, manufacturing and the end use of these unique materials will be demonstrated. The final half of the afternoon will be directed toward cosmetic chemistry including "Effect Pigments" in an eye shadow chemistry, Nail Enamel and Lip Gloss applications.
