PWISTA 2012 Industry Science Teacher Training Program
Presented by Local Science Researchers and Industry Representatives

Tired of reading about the latest technologies and innovative science techniques. Come and experience them in our science teacher training program.

PWISTA, Putnam-Westchester Industry and Science Teacher Alliance, is designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge in modern instrumentation and technology used in industry today. This program will advance your background in analytical skills used in modern laboratories. It will help teachers transfer their knowledge of science applications into better classroom activities.

The primary purpose for each of these sessions is to provide teachers, like you, with the opportunity to experience relevant hands-on science experiments that can be brought back to the science classroom and laboratory. This program is also designed to enlighten teachers on the different jobs available for students who major in Science and Math.

PWISTA is open to all

Microbiological Services (Clinical)

Virology – Some of the most feared and severe diseases are caused by viruses.

The Virology laboratory performs tests for many of these organisms. Influenza

outbreaks are investigated in collaboration with the Center for Disease Control and

Prevention.

Bacteriology/Parasitology - The Bacteriology Laboratory provides identification

of infectious pathogenic bacteria, which provides for the diagnosis of serious

diseases including Meningitis, Legionella, and Salmonella. The Parasitology lab

identifies parasites from clinical specimens. These include Giardia, Cryptosporidia,

Hookworm and Tapeworm.

TB/Mycology – The TB laboratory identifies Tuberculosis in clinical specimens

from all hospitals in Westchester County. The Mycology lab identifies mold in

clinical and environmental samples.

Environmental Services

Water Bacteriology – Identification of different species of bacteria, and an

explanation of why some can be harmful to humans. Overview of the methods

used to detect Coliform bacteria.

Inorganic Chemistry (Wet Bench) – Classical wet chemistry analyses including

nutrients (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and Phosphates), minerals (Calcium and

Magnesium hardness, Chloride, Fluoride and Sulfate), Detergents, Cyanide,

Phenol, biochemical and chemical oxygen demand.

Inorganic Chemistry (Metals) – Metal analysis by atomic absorption and

inductively coupled plasma including heavy metals. Explanation of the need for

metals analysis and what the results mean to different clients. Overview of

instrumentation used to detect metals.

Volatile Organic Chemistry - Discussion of purge and trap technology and an

overview of analytical methods used to detect and quantify volatile organic

chemical compounds.

Semi-volatile Organic Chemistry - Explanation of extraction technology and

overview of analytical Methods used for specific families of semi-volatile organic

compounds (herbicides, pesticides, PCBs, petroleum hydrocarbon scan).

Radiochemistry – Explanation of why radiochemical substances are present and

how they can be harmful to the human body. Overview of the methods used to
