AP Chemistry and AP Biology Workshop

This workshop will provide an opportunity for high school AP Chemistry and Biology teachers to observe interesting demonstrations,

observe experimental procedures using computer interfaced equipment, and listen to and question lecturers on:

bullet

Acid and Base chemistry as covered in AP Chemistry

bullet

Cell Biology-Molecular Movement Across Membranes and Membrane Potential as covered in AP Biology

bullet

Using Vernier Interface Equipment in the Science Classroom - Presented by Walter Rohr, Vernier

Representative and Retired Chemistry Teacher.

The goals of this workshop will be to provide information and materials to the participating teachers that will:

a. enhance your classroom presentations

b. encourage teachers to computer interfaced equipment

c. expand the scope of your laboratory activities using computer interfaced equipment

d. provide a forum for discussion and sharing of ideas

e. refine your skills in solving AP examination problems.

The program will begin with the teachers divided into their disciplines and will end with a presentation on using Vernier equipment in the Science Classroom.

The AP Biology Program will include:

Calculation of water potential values to determine the direction of molecular movement and formation of membrane potential will be the foci of discussion. Participants can expect to discuss membrane structure, modes of transport through membranes, water potential, the sodium potassium pump, electron transport complexes in mitochondria and chloroplasts, and membrane potential. A challenging group project on water potential and the required AP laboratory experiment on osmosis and diffusion will be introduced during the session. Participants are requested to bring a calculator for solving water potential problems. Presenter: Alan Gardner, AP Biology Teacher, Harrison H.S.

The AP Chemistry Program will include:

Opportunity for all to share demonstrations used in the acid base chemistry unit. The instructors will provide the techniques of solving Acid-based equilibrium problems. Both experienced and novice AP Chemistry teachers can benefit from this program. Presenters: Mark Langella, Chemistry teacher, Mahopac High School and Dr. Robert Gamper, Chemistry teacher, Immaculate High School.

Date/Time: Saturday, December 8, 2001; 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Location: Natural Sciences Building/Purchase College

Fee: $50.00 (includes lunch)
