Methods of Teaching Various Sports in the everyday Physical Education Curriculum

Mahopac Sports Association and PWISTA

 This four Saturday  institute will provide an opportunity for high school Physical Education Instructors to obtain the latest techniques to instruct the most popular everyday sports into their everyday curriculum.  Our team of instructors are the areas top coaches. All of them are former coaches of the year in their respective sport categories.

The institute will provide information and materials to participating teachers that will:

enhance your classroom presentations in many areas of the physical education program

encourage teachers to use methods in their classrooms that involve new demonstration ideas

provide a forum for discussion and sharing of their materials and ideas.

refine your skills in instruction

This program is designed for physical education instructors and coaches of the respective sports.

Topics to be covered will include: 

Session 1, December 5th, 2009

"Baseball Fundamentals" Presented by Frank J. Miele

For 22 years as Varsity Baseball Coach he used passion and discipline to compile an unparalleled 375-140 record that included 15 league titles, 5 Section 1 titles, 4 Regional Championships and 4 State Final Four trips. As a "throwback" and a firm believer in fundamentals he received Coach of the Year Honors 15 times from the League and 6 times for Section 1. The N.Y. Daily News, Gannett News and North Country News also bestowed Coach of the Year Honors on him during his tenure. In this program he will share his favorite techniques in the many aspects of the game. Participants will gain the knowledge of the techniques of hitting , pitching and fielding. Methodology of coaching will be a key aspect of the program.

Session 2, Jan 9th, 2010,

"Lacrosse Fundamentals" Presented by Joe Corace

Joe Corace has coached Lacrosse for 27 years. He has an Empire State lacrosse coach and Coordinator from 1987-2002. He has had the opportunity to coach 14 High School All Americans, won 5 Section Championships, 4 Regional Championships, 1 State Championship and has coached in 7 sectional Finals in 9 years as head Lacrosse Coach. He was named Sectional Coach of the year two times, League Coach of the Year Three Times and Lacrosse Man of The Year Twice. He also was Assistant Coach for the New Jersey Pride for 2 Seasons. Coach Corace was inducted into the Hudson Valley Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2004.  Coach Corace will share his methodology of coaching and techniques of Lacrosse which has helped develop his premier players.

Session 3, Feb 6th , 2010

"Fundamentals of Football" Presented by Lou DiRienzo

Lou DiRienzo has been head coach at New Rochelle for 20 seasons, compiling a career record of 85-40. Among his many accomplishments are winning the Section 1 Championship and advancing to the State Finals in 2000. The Huguenots also finished as runner-up in Section 1 in 1990 and 1994. For his excellence in coaching, DiRienzo was named Section 1 Coach of the Year in 1994. Coach DiRienzo will share his practice methodology and many of his practice fundamentals which has made him successful.

"Fundamentals of Defensive Football" Presented by Dan MacNeill

Dan MacNeill begins his 13th season as SUNY Cortland’s head football coach in 2009. His teams are a combined 80-46 and have made seven postseason appearances, including three NCAA tournament showings. His 80 victories rank second all-time at Cortland and his .635 winning percentage is best in school history. MacNeill led Cortland to one of the best seasons in school history in 2008. The Red Dragons finished 11-2, including two victories in the NCAA Division III playoffs before losing at eventual national champion Mount Union in the national quarterfinals. Both the 11 victories and the quarterfinal showing matched school records. Cortland was recognized as the top Division III team in the East by winning both the Lambert Trophy and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Team of the Year awards. One of the nation’s top defensive coaches, MacNeill’s charges consistently ranked among the best defensive teams in the Yankee Conference. His 1991 squad finished the year first nationally in scoring defense, second in total defense and fifth in rushing defense while leading the Yankee Conference in every defensive category. The Wildcats placed first nationally in rushing defense in 1992. In 1996, Villanova finished 8-4 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.While at Villanova, MacNeill coached three AFCA/Kodak First Team All-Americans, one Associated Press All-American, six first team All-Yankee Conference performers, six first team All-ECAC selections and one player who went on to the NFL. He received a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Villanova in 1994. Coach MacNeil will share his favorite techniques of the the many aspects of a successful defense at the collegiate level.
