Course Description:

This course is designed for the average motivated student with a strong interest in science.  A strong algebraic skills background is a plus.  Course topics satisfy the New York State Chemistry Regents Curriculum requirements.

Procedure:

Class meets daily, with alternating single and double periods.

Laboratory Requirements:

            NYS Regents has a mandatory lab requirement. Successful completion of this course earns one credit in lab science. Each student must complete 1200 minutes of laboratory minutes and submit laboratory reports as proof of completion. Students not having the logged laboratory minutes and reports by June 1^st are barred from taking the Regents Exam. After the completion of the class, the lab reports must be kept in school for six months following the date of the exam. Pursuant to section 7 of the Education Law, Section 8.2©

Regents Level Chemistry

 Expectations:

1. Illegal lateness and absences will be dealt with in accordance with the attendance policy.
2. Proper school behavior is to be observed at all times.
3. There is 15 minutes of Homework everyday and it is to be completed in full by the due date.
4. A  lab notebook ,3 Dry Erase Expo Markers,one Clear Plastic Sheet Cover
   2-3 inch -Three Ring Binder for Theory and Lab, Non Graphing Calculator with scientific functions and reference table must be with students at all times
5. Tests are announced at least 2 days ahead of time. Make up tests are given after school the day the student returns.
6. Quizzes are given on a daily basis.
7. Labs are due two days after completion of the experiment. Labs handed in late receive no point credit but must be submitted to be eligible for the regents. Makeup labs are done after school within 2 days of returning to class.
8. Students are to follow lab safety guidelines to be covered in class.

11. Grades are based on 50 % exams, 20 % quizzes, 20% lab data reports, , and  10 % open book quizzes, lab journals and Homework.
12. Grades are always posted on Parent-Connect. Students will receive personalized class progress reports every two weeks to be signed by parents and returned the following day.
13. Students are recommended to take the NYS Chemistry Regents Exam.

Upon completion of the program students will be prepared to enter college level chemistry programs.

SAT Honors  Prep Chemistry

Course Description:

 Our course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. In addition the program has been specifically designed for first year chemistry students so they can take two years of curriculum in one year. Our course meets the objectives of a good general chemistry college  course. Students attain a depth of understanding of fundamentals and a reasonable competence in dealing with chemical problems. The course contributes to the development of the students' abilities to think clearly and to express their ideas, orally and in writing, with clarity and logic.

Usually the AP Chemistry course is designed to be taken only after the successful completion of a first course in high school chemistry. This program has been modified to allow students to take the course as a first year chemistry course even though it is not recommended by the College Board.

The students and the program will be evaluated by taking  exit exams at the end of the year.

·          College Board Advanced Placement Chemistry Exam

·         SAT  exam in Chemistry

·         The New York State Chemistry Regents Exam

To develop the requisite intellectual and laboratory skills, our students have a minimum of 400 minutes ( 80 Minute Blocks)  in a five day cycle which is adequate classroom and laboratory time. Of that time, a minimum of 80 minutes per week, preferably in one session, will be spent in the lab. In addition, students will have to spend at least five hours a week studying outside of class. Normally our school offers two sections of AP Chemistry as an accelerated course for students as a first year chemistry course.
