Physics Program Overview
The Physics Institute supports teachers of all experience levels in understanding updates to the Regents Physics course and examination, including:
- Modifications to the Reference Tables
- New test question formats
- Physics Investigations aligned with NYSSLS
Teachers will examine NYSED resources—such as the Performance Level Descriptions and the Educator Guide—to clarify expectations for three-dimensional (3D) learning and to compare NYSSLS with the former Core Curriculum.
A central component of this institute is hands-on engagement with framing labs that prepare educators for the NYS Regents Performance Lab Investigations. These performance tasks provide authentic scientific and engineering experiences in which students demonstrate understanding of physics concepts and practices in real-world contexts.
Teachers will learn how to assemble investigation kits, manage materials, and facilitate each lab effectively in their classrooms.
Investigations Included
- Study of Energy Conversion
Investigate and describe energy conversions and efficiency among potential, kinetic, thermal, and electrical energy. - Guided Inquiry: Forces and Interactions
Investigate and describe electric and magnetic forces and interactions. - Guided Inquiry: Energy and Calorimetry
Explore thermal energy transfer by measuring temperature changes through the lens of the second law of thermodynamics.
